Dal Lake in Kashmir holds significant historical value and represents Kashmir’s unique houseboat lifestyle. The Dal Lake in Kashmir hosted its first-ever all-women boat race, featuring over 150 participants, promoting gender equality and empowerment, marking a historic event in the region.

An important milestone towards gender equality in sports in the Kashmir Valley was achieved with the all-women boat race on Dal Lake. Inspiring more girls, questioning social norms, and fostering a more inclusive sports culture are all anticipated outcomes of Kashmir’s increased support for female athletes.

A Peak Into The All-Women Boat Race

In order to encourage women’s empowerment in water sports, Bilkis Mir, an athlete from Kashmir and India’s first female Chief Jury for the Olympics in Paris, organised this all-female boat race. Mir has trained numerous young women in Kashmir and has been striving to open the closed gender disparity doors.

As reported by The Times of India, Bilkis Mir felt immense pride and called this race a historic day by recognising the first race exclusively for women, a rare opportunity for women in sports. She praised the girls who participated, revealing promising new talent. She also mentioned adopting 35 girls to train for national and international competitions, showcasing their dedication to women’s sports.

Participants saw it as a sign of progress for women. Competitors also expressed their joy and hope for more events like this. With over 100 participants, three girls emerged as winners, highlighting the importance of sports for girls and the inspiration of the ‘aqua queen’ aka Bilkis Mir.

The event was not only a race but also aimed to identify and nurture new talent, with 35 girls selected for future training at national and international events. All competitors received certificates and cash prizes, while the top three racers earned special awards.

With this all-female boat race, one thing is clear: women are breaking barriers in every field, and nothing is impossible. These women are truly wonderful.
