Kochi Water Metro Sees A Ridership Of Over 1 Lakh Commuters In Just 2 Weeks Of Inauguration

India got its first ever water metro in Kerala’s Kochi district on April 25. The first water metro was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the evening. The government of Kerala and the German firm KfW have funded this dream project. It connects about 10 islands in and around the city. The services have become so popular and were so anticipated that already more than a lakh commuters have travelled in it. 

Kochi Water Metro Witnessed Over 1 Lakh Commuters

The Kochi Water Metro witnessed a total of 1,06, 528 passengers in just two weeks of its inauguration. This information was put out in a press release by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). 

The services began on April 25 on two routes: High Court-Vypeen and Vyttila-Kakkanad. The ferry service has seen an amazing response from the passengers. There are about nine ferries that take turns taking passengers on the two routes. 

This service is not only used by commuters, but tourists and others have also used it. The water metro ticket fare will be ₹20 and ₹30 respectively. Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala’s Chief Minister, will significantly revolutionise the state’s water transportation industry and increase tourism.

Experience An Exotic View Of The Backwaters

The Kochi Water Metro project will have about 78 electric boats and 38 terminals. The Kochi Water Metro project will cost a total of 1,137 crore rupees. 

The water metro is electrically powered, environmentally friendly, and safe for individuals with disabilities. The wide windows on its air-conditioned boats will provide a beautiful view of the backwaters. By using the Water Metro, it takes 25 minutes to get from Vyttila to Kakkanad.
