Isn’t it a huge relief, especially for the ones who commute daily? An official recently shared that metro services are expected to start on the Joka-Taratala route and Garia-Ruby route. The official shared on Thursday about the probability of these two routes starting operating by the end of this year. Further, the official also added that the metro stretch connecting Salt Lake and Howrah via Kolkata may start providing services by August 2023. With the completion and successful start of these new metro stretches in Kolkata, commuting will be a bit tolerable.

The East-West metro stretch of 16.6 km bridging between Salt Lake’s Sector V and Howrah Maidan via Kolkata is already operational in some parts of the City of Joy. At the moment, the metro is providing services to passengers between Sector V metro station and Sealdah metro station. On this route, 10.8 km from Howrah and Phoolbagan is an underground construction This 10.8 km stretch also passes below Howrah’s Hooghly river. And the remaining route of 5.8 km is elevated.

The Construction Was Delayed Because Of These Reasons:

The metro route between Sector V and Howrah Maidan took a long time to start operating. It was supposed to start way back but there were a few unfortunate accidents on this route. According to a report by the PTI, there were 3 accidents while working on this stretch. These accidents took place when the tunnelling procedure was in continuation in Bowbazar in Central Kolkata. It happened in a period of three years.

Also in August 2019, there was another accident when a tunnel-boring machine struck an aquifer and it led to an accident where buildings in Bowbazar fell down. More houses got harmed in May and October 2022.
