Kolkata Airport To Undergo Expansion For Handling Tourist Footfall & More
The authorities of the airport are all set to develop newer sections here that will help in handling a huge tourist footfall. With this, the expansion will also help in increasing the number of flights and runway capacity. C. Pattabhi is the director of the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. And according to a report by The Telegraph- My Kolkata, C. Pattabhi shared that the airport is getting prepared to accommodate more passengers in the upcoming days.
Presently, the Kolkata airport has enough space to accommodate all passengers and operate a proper number of flights. But the expansion is to handle the increasing number of passengers and flights in the coming future.

With the new additions and changes, this airport will soon be able to accommodate additional 2 million passengers per year. Right now, the terminal has a capacity of 26 million passengers every year. With more flyers, the demand for more flights increases too. The plans will also expand the runaway capacity to 45 flights per hour. Currently, at rush times, the runaway capacity is about 30 flights in an hour.
What Are The Plans For The Expansion?
- There are some spaces inside the airport premises that have not been used well before. The authorities have plans to use these places of the terminal building to expand.
- The airport also has a few artificial water bodies and there are plans to use those places to expand more area.
- There will be new taxiways to smoothen the process of take-off.
- New gates and bigger boarding areas and security areas are a part of the expansion plan.
