Kolkata Plans To Revamp Tram Services With Lightweight & Energy-Efficient Coaches

Modern lightweight trams might soon come to Kolkata. The state government is planning to revamp the city’s tram services by introducing lightweight, modern trams from abroad. These trams would be similar to those operating in Australia and will be energy-efficient too. Here’s what we know so far.

Kolkata Plans To Replace Traditional Coaches With Modern Trams

The Transport Department of Kolkata is planning to replace the slow, traditional coaches with modern and lightweight trams in the city. According to The Times of India, officials had previously planned to stop tram services in the city, but they are now aiming to revitalise the service. The move has been welcomed by tram enthusiasts.

Reportedly, these new trams will be procured from abroad and will be similar to the ones operating in Australia. Plus, they will be energy-efficient and ensure zero emissions, making them better for the environment as well. The decision was recently announced by Transport Minister Arjun Singh.

Oldest Tram System In Asia

Currently, trams in Kolkata operate on only two routes: Esplanade-Shyambazar and Esplanade-Gariahat. Authorities will conduct a survey to identify other routes as well. According to The Times of India, the government is also planning to restore the Esplanade-Kidderpore route, which is popular for its ride through the city’s green stretches. This route is also closely linked to the heritage of Kolkata’s tram network.

You would be interested to know that Kolkata’s tram system is the oldest operating tram system in Asia. It is more than 150 years old and dates back to 1873. Many trams are lying in depots but have become unfit for service due to poor maintenance. This is why the government is planning to bring in new and modern trams from abroad. The plan is still in its initial stages, and authorities will first conduct a study on how trams can be revitalised. They will move ahead with the project after that.
