Kolkata’s Park Street Christmas Is So Iconic. But Have You Wondered Why?

Kolkatans, are you ready to have a blast celebrating Christmas in the City of Joy? Visitors from different parts of Kolkata, nearby places, other states, and even abroad, attend the glorious events and enjoy the magnificent festivities in Park Street every year. This part of the city gets lit up with loads of bright and vibrant lights and LED ornaments and lakhs of people rush to Park Street just to witness the glory of the lighting and the massive arrangements for celebrating the festival.

Why Is Park Street Christmas So Well-Celebrated?

Sumanta Mukherjee (@Sumanta88508795) took to the X (formerly Twitter) platform to share pictures of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurating the Kolkata Christmas festival at Allen Park.

Celebrations and tourist footfall start coming into action at Allen Park much before the main day of Christmas. Visitors have already started exploring Park Street and click lots of pictures and videos. Celebrating Holly Jolly Christmas on such a massive scale is not something recent in the City of Joy. Continuing for over a decade, Kolkatans and visitors enjoy the last festive season of the year with pomp and glory, and the utmost joy.

The city celebrates so many festivals and occasions all throughout the year but only a few stand up to be so iconic even after years and years. Eye-catching lighting, splendid decor, singing carols, opening churches, and of course the most famous Christmas tree at Allen Park are only some of the many factors that make this festival so special. Even after a massive crowd, people do not leave a chance to walk through the crowded and lively streets and sing in joy and merriment.

One of the many reasons that make the year’s last holiday season so special for people is the long duration of keeping the spirits alive. Park Street Christmas is not something that is enjoyed only on Christmas Eve and Christmas. Instead, the celebrations kickstart a few days before December 25 and continue as long as the year ends.

What started as decorating from St Xavier’s College to Jawaharlal Nehru Road has now stretched out further to Mullick Bazar as well. How can we even forget about the grand festivities near the St Paul’s Cathedral? In fact, the Vardaan Market area also celebrates the festival with amazing festivities in recent years.

If you think that visitors get bored of the week-long festivities, then you are sadly wrong. Park Street celebrates Christmas in a similar pattern every year with some innovations and new additions and keeps the traditions alive with high spirits. From active to lazy people, everyone joins the crowd to walk all around and check out the stunning decor and lighting. Be it the centre of the roads or any corner, the artists do not leave even a small portion from adding glitz and glamour.
