Landslides Create Chaos On Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Leaves Commuters Stranded For 3rd Consecutive Day

For the third day in a row, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH 44) is completely blocked by traffic due to a large-scale landslide and constant stone shooting in the Ramban district. Following this natural disaster, more than 1,600 vehicles—1,000 Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) and 600 Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs)—are left stranded.

Major Landslides And Snowstorms Hit Jammu

The area has seen frequent mudslides and shooting stones due to the persistent rainfall. It has made the highway dangerous for both authorities and commuters. According to India.com, landslides have occurred at several key locations along the route, including Cafeteria Trishul Mode, Dalwass Mehad, Maroog, and Digdool. These incidents have increased the risk for travellers, as large boulders have been known to tumble down the hillsides.

Furthermore, the problem is made worse by the fact that several other important roads, such as the Srinagar-Ladakh road and the roads connecting the Line of Control (LOC) areas in Kupwara and Gurez, have also been closed due to heavy snowfall. According to India.com, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police emphasised the ongoing obstruction on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. They highlighted the risk posed by significant landslides at Kishtwari Pather and Banihal, as well as the sporadic stone-throwing in different places between Nashree and Banihal.

Authorities are working to remove the debris and guarantee the safety of individuals who are stuck. However, the highway’s closure has hampered the valley’s access to necessary supplies and services. As per the India.com reports, Rohit Baskotra, SSP of traffic on NH, revealed that the Ramban administration and NHAI are working nonstop to restore the damaged section of the route at Kishtwari Pathar, leading to Kashmir.

Following these developments, people are encouraged to avoid using National Highway-44 (NH-44) until it is considered safe to do so. Additionally, the administration has cautioned residents at higher elevations by issuing avalanche warnings in several Kashmiri locations.

These incidents highlight the fragile balance between human infrastructure and the inflexible forces of nature.
