Lin Laishram Tells Us The Significance Of Traditional Vegetarian Manipuri Thali
As the food is brought out, Kamiya jokes about how much Manipuri food she has eaten already! It seems like she has eaten all the Manipuri food there is. As more and more food is brought out, Randeep jokes saying that this is only the first main course, signifying that even more food is going to be making it on the table soon.
The chef explains that although the food served to our host today is a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian, the traditional thali is vegetarian. There are 108 dishes in the thali. He proceeds to tell us that only six dishes have been served from the 108 today. Lin tells us that when they offer “bhog” in their temples, an odd number of dishes are offered. But when there is a “mahabhog”, a 108-dish thali is offered.

What Is In The Manipuri Thali Served At This Brunch?
Kamiya was very grateful that out of the hundred dishes, Lin only chose six for the menu in this episode. As they all laugh about it, the chef begins to explain everything in the thali. The first dish is a fried preparation of eggplant and almonds. Then, there is also a Manipur-style fish curry and a Manipuri-style dal preparation. Accompanying these, there is a dish made with pumpkin and a special herb belonging to the basil family that is only native to the state of Manipur.

The star of the show is a spicy mashed vegetable chutney that is very special to the state. It is made with mashed vegetables and fermented fish. It’s called Eromba and you should definitely try it for yourself!
