The heart of London has become a window into the vibrant culture of Assam. The Natural History Museum in London is hosting a special exhibition that highlights the state’s animals and textiles. This display features themes of a beautiful Mekhela Sador with Hargila, or Greater Adjutant Stork. Dr Purnima Devi Barman and her colleagues produced the exhibit.

London Museum Showcases Mekhela Sador With Hargila

Dr Purnima Devi Barman, a prominent conservationist, has been at the forefront of these efforts. The Natural History Museum in London is hosting a special exhibition that highlights the state’s animals and textiles. This display features themes of a beautiful Mekhela Sador with Hargila, or Greater Adjutant Stork.  Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly, Twitter) to appreciate the exhibit. He wrote, “This beautiful Mekhela Sador, woven with imprints of the Greater Adjutant Stork (Hargila), is designed by the team of Dr @StorkSister and displayed at the Natural History Museum of London. Appreciate her unique efforts in taking forward the message of Hargila conservation!”

Purnima Devi Barman has committed her life to the vital work of preserving the larger adjutant stork, which is at risk of extinction. Safe nesting habitats are built and local communities are now more aware of the critical need for conservation with her unwavering grassroots efforts.

Cultural Exchange & Global Awareness

The exhibition at the London Museum serves as a cultural bridge, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Assam’s unique heritage among a global audience. The Hargila, or Greater Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos dubius), is a critically endangered bird species, primarily found in Assam. With its large, imposing stature and distinctive appearance, it is an integral part of Assam’s ecological landscape. Moreover complementing the story of the Hargila is the exquisite display of Mekhala Sador, a traditional Assamese attire. The Mekhela sador has intricate designs and fine craftsmanship made from Assam silk, particularly Muga and Eri silk.

Additionally, art and culture play a pivotal role in conservation by fostering a deeper emotional connection between people and the natural world. Moreover, the exhibition sheds light on the innovative approaches to conservation that integrate cultural heritage with environmental protection. As the world grapples with environmental and cultural challenges, such exhibitions serve as beacons of hope and inspiration.
