This milk has a huge demand in the cosmetic industry.

Nagpur Jenny Farm Sells Jenny Milk

When in Nagpur, take an internal road, which will lead you to Ghogli village in Besa. This village is a fast-growing small section on the outskirts of the city. A little further you will find Nagpur Jenny Farm, which sells jenny milk.

This farm is home to about 20 donkeys and is the first of its kind in Maharashtra. It is India’s 5th such farm, as per consultant veterinarians Dr Ravindra Dhurve and Dr Ranjan Bhagat. The duo explains, laying stress on the fact that this was certainly not a jackass idea.

A lot of nuanced planning has gone into getting the business where it is today. The business started three months ago and today has revenue that can easily cover all the expenses.

The livestock at this farm includes 31 female donkeys (jennies). Out of these 31 jennies, 27 are lactating and have 4 foals. Dr Bhagat explains that each donkey costs around ₹80,000. This is as much as a high-yielding cow costs.

Catering For The Huge Demand

The daily yield from these jennies is around 10 litres. This yield is sold for ₹2000 per litre to the cosmetic industry.

A milk pick-up van comes from Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli every month to lift the stocks. Until then the stocks are stored in a deep freezer. The vehicle comes to Nagpur after covering four other farms in the south.

Donkey Palace, in Tirunelveli, which is the first organised farm, purchases this milk. It is then processed and sent to the cosmetic industry. Dr Ravindra Dhurve said that there is a huge demand for jenny milk, and the supply does not match it. He is unsure about the end users of the milk but certainly can see the high demand.
