The pure amalgamation of art, baking and mathematics come together to prepare the kaleidoscopic intricate geometric multi-layered cake of Malaysia, Kek Lapis The name in itself means ‘layered cake’ in Bahasa Malaysia. It is prepared during special occasions and with Eid just a few days away, it is a perfect time to bake this delicious goodness.

Kek Lapis is the epitome of bringing food, here it is cake, to a sublime art form. From the outside, it might just look like a loaf of cake but the wizardry happens when you cut the beautiful cake to reveal some of the prettiest colourful geometric patterns you have ever seen in a cake! It typically has 12 colourful layers and can go up to 20 or more to create a complex yet pleasing Malaysian cake.

This cake is carefully crafted by either broiling or grilling one thin layer of batter after the other. This is done while ensuring that the previous layers don’t burn. Sometimes, bakers tend to bake each layer and then assemble to create a beautiful geometric cake. It is quite tedious work but the final result is all worth it, for the eyes and the taste buds!

Is A Degree In Mathematics Seriously Necessary For This?

Sharifah Zainon has a baking studio in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is a baker by profession but she is utilising her knowledge of engineering in preparing delish Kek Lapis.
