It is no secret that women are equal to men in all aspects and walks of life. Yet we are often put down by society as the weaker sex, second to men who are considering the strongest both physically and emotionally. Mohana Singh is one woman who proves everyone wrong as she emerged the first Indian woman fighter pilot ever to operate the Hawk Jet Aircrafts. Here’s her story of how she achieved this incredible task amidst another heavily male-dominated profession, with two more female fighter pilots, Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawna Kanth, the only 3 women in the Indian Air Force (IAF).

How It All Happened
Together with Avani Chaturvedi and Bhawna Kanth, Mohana Singh too joined the fighter stream, where you get trained becoming a fighter pilot and operating fighter planes and aircraft. Predominantly male-dominated, these 3 women made history by joining this field in June 2016. From there, Singh diligently made her way towards operating the most advanced aircraft, the Hawk I. What propelled Mohana was her desire to chase the incredible speeds at which these fighter planes need to be flown.
This need led her to her the most advanced fighter plane, the Hawk I. Mohana Singh instantly became the first Indian woman to fully operate the Hawk I by day.

What’s More?
Achieving this task was no cakewalk for sure for Mohana Singh was given the opportunity only after she secured a clean 380 hours of practice on a Hawk model as well as 500 hours of flying free of any incidents! Crazy right? She is also fully trained in air combat.
This very first batch of women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force speaks volumes of what women can truly achieve when given the opportunity. Yet, we also hope that women don’t have to tirelessly strive and prove society wrong again and again for it to take notice and stop the ongoing discrimination against them. #EqualOpportunitiesForAll
In an interview with Quint, Mohana sent a very simple yet strong message to all young girls and women out there ,” Spread your wings and fly high.” The future sure is female! Catch the full interview here :
