Meghalaya’s Whistling Village Kongthong Nominated As ‘Best Tourism Village’ In India & Here’s Why It’s A Must-Visit

The Kongthong village in Meghalaya has been nominated by the Ministry of Tourism for the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ award of the World Tourism Organisation. Kongthong, a picturesque village in Meghalaya, is also known as the Whistling Village as people here communicate with each other by songs. Interestingly, the names of the people in this village are also tunes. Along with Kongthong, the ministry has also nominated Telangana’s Pochampally and Madhya Pradesh’s Ladhpura Khas for the award.

Nirmala Sitharaman Congratulates Meghalaya CM For The Achievement

After the nomination of Kongthong for the award, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote on Twitter, “#Meghalaya‘s whistling village Kongthong is selected for entry to the @UNWTO ‘Best Tourism Village’ along with 2 other villages in the country.” Congratulating Sangma, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman wrote, “Congratulations Meghalaya on Kongthong being selected ‘Best Tourism Village”. @SangmaConrad The village in which people compose a tune for calling a person in the place of names!” 

In Kongthong, when a baby is born, whatever tune comes out from the heart of the mother becomes the name of the baby. There is also a quiant cottage amid the mountains of the village, the Kongthong Traveller’s Nest, for tourists. Telangana’s Pochampally And Madhya Pradesh’s Ladhpura Khas Also Get Selected For The Award

Other than the Whistling Village, Telangana’s Pochampally and Madhya Pradesh’s Ladhpura Khas have also been selected for the award. Located in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana, the Pochampally village is famous for intricately designed Ikkat sarees and other handlooms. The village is scenic too comprising hills, palm trees, stunning lakes and more. The Ladhpura Khas village is located in the Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh.
