Oman: 3000 Years Old Graves Found Revealing Ancient Rituals & More

In Oman, archaeologists recently uncovered a series of ancient graves and artefacts. These date back thousands of years along the coastal road. Not to mention, it offers new insights into the early burial practices in the region. Here’s all you need to know about this development that gives us a glimpse into the past.

3000 Years Old Grave Discovered In Oman

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism recently revealed that the survey and excavation works were carried out across three sides. These stretched over 14 km and 10 graves were revealed, which are believed to date to the last second millennium and early first millennium BC. It should be noted that among the most notable discoveries were two human skeletons. As revealed by the Gulf News and its report, these were found in a crouched burial position, which is a practice that is associated with ancient civilisations.

Several Artefacts Also Discovered

The excavation also resulted in the discovery of a range of artefacts. These include shells, beads, and the bones of birds and fish. The discovery of these items shows a ritualistic element, which is linked to the burial customs of the time. Officials have also said that these findings provide valuable evidence of funeral traditions and social practises during the key stage in the early history of Oman and add to the growing archaeological record of the country. Moreover, further analysis is also expected to shed more light on the cultural and historical significance of the site.

Spanning 1,00,000 Years Of History

With these findings, one gets insight into practices of the past and the rituals that they may have followed. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that Oman has a rich historical past, and it spans more than 100,000 years. A past, which is characterised by ancient Maritime trade, was influenced by persons in the Portuguese and British presence. However, coming to prehistoric findings, sites have been discovered where over 100 surface scatters of stone tools that belonged to the Nubian Complex. There have also been discoveries of stone tools and other artefacts that give us a peek into the past.
