Are you someone who has plans to apply for a driving test soon? Well, if your answer is ‘yes,’ then it’s probably going to be much more difficult for you to pass your test in the UAE quite soon. We say this because from January 1st, 2027 onwards, learner drivers will automatically fail their test, if they make one serious error, even after they achieve the minimum score for a pass. Here’s all you need to know about this new rule relating to driving tests in the UAE.

What Is The New Rule Regarding Driving Tests?

As per the current rule, driving license applicants need to have a score of 75% in both the theory and practical tests. It is only after this that they are able to qualify for a UAE driving license. However, according to Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026, which approves Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024; which is on the regulation of traffic means that if there is any dangerous error is made by learner drivers during a practical driving evaluation would be marked as an automatic failure.

What Kind Of Errors Result In Automatic Failure?

Talking about the errors that result in automatic failure includes the following

  • Losing control of the car
  • Ignoring traffic signs or signals
  • Making dangerous errors when changing gears
  • Hitting a curb or barrier

Additionally, a learner will also be marked as an automatic fail. If the examiner is forced to intervene in order to avoid a dangerous situation.

It Comes Into Effect On January 1st, 2027

This new reform, however, does not come into place until January 1st. Not to mention, it does not affect any tests that are scheduled before January. But learner drivers who are currently taking the lessons must ensure that they keep in mind the upcoming changes to procedures.

It should be noted that driving schools and licensing authorities have already been instructed to update their testing procedures. These testing procedures would reflect the new rules. The new rules, however, do not mention whether there would be a fixed waiting period before the learners can retake a test. Neither does the rule mention if the test fee needs to be paid after a failure, or if required exam ends immediately after an automatic failure incident.

So, make sure to keep this update in mind if you are someone who has plans to apply for a driving license in the UAE.
