It was recently announced that government employees in Abu Dhabi will be entitled to 15 types of leave. These are under the new detailed framework that has been introduced by the Abu Dhabi government’s enablement department. Here’s a look at the 15 types of leave that government employees are entitled to in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi Government Employees To Get 15 Types Of Leave

This has been implemented as a part of the executive regulations of Law No. (8) of 2025 on human resources. According to this, government employees in Abu Dhabi will get 15 types of leave. The annual leave, which is a key pillar of the system, entitles employees to 22 to 30 working days per year on the basis of their grade. Through this framework, a comprehensive system, which governs leave types, durations, administrative procedures, and eligibility, is established for balancing employee well-being along with organisational efficiency.

Employees To Complete Probation Before Being Granted Leave

It is expected that employees complete their probation period before they’re granted the annual leave. However, there may be exceptions that can be made by the head of the entity. The approval of annual leave should be issued within seven working days of submission. It is automatically considered approved in case approval fails. Government entities may also grant a full annual leave balance at the start of the year.

Regulations Define Leave Categories

The regulations also set seven conditions when it comes to annual leave eligibility, along with seven cases where the entitlement doesn’t apply. Moreover, this also includes periods that are spent on study leave or full-time leave. Not to mention, the regulations also define the leave categories. These categories have a fixed duration and include the following:

  • 12 days for work-related injury leave
  • 10 days for marriage leave
  • Three months for maternity leave
  • Three months for adoption leave
  • Six days for paternity leave
  • 10 days for bereavement leave
  • Four months and 10 days for the waiting period (iddah)
  • 15 days for Hajj leave
  • Three months for companion leave

As further mentioned by the Gulf News, sick leaves have been capped at 15 days per year with full pay. In fact, employees can also take up to two days per instance without there being any need for medical certificates. However, they must not exceed 10 days annually; after all, longer absences require certification.
