Emirates recently revised the way it calculates the expiry of Skywards Miles. Yes, this comes into effect from next year, which would replace the current birth month-based system. It would be replaced with a simpler three-year validity period that is linked to the miles when they are earned. Here’s all you need to know about this development and how it affects you.
Emirates Skywards Expiry Policy Changed
Emirates, in its new policy, is changing how the Skywards Miles that are earned expire. Basically, Skywards Miles earned from June 1st 2027, will remain valid for three years from the date that they are earned. So, whether it’s through a flight or partner activity, the expiry date will be rounded to the end of that month. As revealed in a report by Gulf News, this change, however, does not affect the meals that are already there in the member’s account or through the miles that are earned before June 1st, 2027. These miles will continue to expire under the existing system on the basis of the birth month.
What Does It Mean For Members?
Regarding the new expiry rule, Emirates aims to give all Skyward members a more consistent and predictable miles validity period. Currently, two members who earn miles on the same day can have different expiry dates because their birthdays tend to fall in different months. So, under the new system, this calculation of expiry would no longer depend on when the member’s birthday. Instead, they can earn the mile and follow the same three-year earning formula for every member. The expiry dates get rounded to the end of the relevant month. It should be noted that this would make it easier for members to keep track of when miles are due for expiry.

Skywards Is Also Offering A Temporary Reduction For Retaining Membership
At the end of the 2025-26 Emirates financial year, over 38 million members were in the programme. Emirates mentions how, in the last 20 years, Skyward has distributed over 400 billion Miles. These are 300+ partners that are across 1,400 flight destinations and 30,000 hotels. It continues to expand its global membership base, and members will be able to redeem over 800 flight rewards daily. It should be noted that Emirates Skywards is also offering members a temporary reduction when it comes to the requirements needed for retaining or upgrading the membership. So, until August 31st, 2026, eligible members will be able to retain their current membership, or they can move to the next tier if they achieve 80% of the usual tier miles.
The reduced requirements for the tier miles are as follows:
- Silver – 20,000 Tier Miles / 20 qualifying flights
- Gold – 40,000 Tier Miles / 40 qualifying flights
- Platinum – 120,000 Tier Miles and there should be at least one qualifying First or Business Class flight
Eligible members can also earn an additional 20% bonus on Tier Miles for qualifying travel completed between May 8th and August 31st. This offer is applicable for eligible Emirates-marketed flights, which are operated by Emirates and flydubai and flydubai-marketed flights that are operated by flydubai or Emirates.
So, the temporary tier promotion means UAE-based flyers can make use of their lower qualification requirements until the end of August.
