From 1.5K km to 3.8K km, Qatar Unveils New Cycling Expansion Plan To Support Green Transport

Qatar is going bigger on cycling. A lot bigger, actually. Qatar has officially launched an updated bicycle master plan that adds more than 3,800 kilometres of cycling routes, along with new crossings, support hubs and rules around micromobility.

Qatar Plans 3,800 KM Of New Cycling Routes Across The Country

The updated plan was announced by the Ministry of Transport on 3 June 2026 and is meant to prepare for Qatar’s fast-growing cities and changing transport needs.

One detail from the report stood out immediately. Around 19% of people in Qatar already own bicycles or micromobility devices. But despite that, these are used in less than 1% of daily trips.

For many residents, bikes are still mostly linked to exercise, weekend rides or sports tracks. Daily commuting by bike just hasn’t really become normal yet.

The Plan Is Massive In Scale

The updated strategy includes over 3,800 km of bike routes spread across the country. Some will be standalone cycling paths, while others connect directly with pedestrian tracks.

Also planned are more than 110 km of grade-separated crossings. Basically, safer ways for cyclists and e-scooter users to move around without constantly dealing with traffic interruptions.

There are also plans for seven large amenity hubs that will support riders with facilities and services.

Thousands Of Residents Were Asked About It

Officials said more than 5,000 interview surveys were carried out across Qatar to understand how people use bikes and micromobility devices. Existing routes were reviewed. Technical meetings were held and international transport models were studied before updating the plan.

The Ministry says implementation will happen in phases: short-term, medium-term and long-term, with progress tracked through performance indicators.

Cycling Is Becoming Part Of Bigger City Planning

Beyond fitness or recreation, Qatar now seems to be treating cycling as part of a wider transport system rather than a side activity.

The updated master plan also introduces policies, infrastructure guidelines and a national geodatabase to help both government and private companies coordinate future projects better.

For people who already cycle regularly, this could make daily riding easier and safer. For everyone else, it may simply mean having another transport option that feels practical enough to actually use
