Following reports that more than 100 children fell terribly ill in Bihar after eating a mid-day meal allegedly contaminated by a dead snake at a government-run school, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has launched a probe on the matter. The incident took place last week at a school in Mokama, Patna.
Over 100 Children Fall Ill After Dead Snake Found In Bihar School Meal
The NHRC has launched an investigation into reports that over 100 children became ill after consuming a school lunch in which a dead snake was discovered. This move comes after a media report revealed that around 500 children had consumed the mid-day meal. Over two dozen children were admitted to Mokama’s referral hospital for treatment, while two others were treated at the Barh sub-divisional hospital.
According to NewsX, the meal was served at the Upkramit Madhya Vidyalaya in Mekra Village, Bihar, on April 24. NHRC in a statement shared that the cook had, reportedly, removed the dead snake from the food and went on to serve the meal to the kids. According to them, if the report is indeed true, then it raises serious concerns about the violation of the students’ human rights.
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Bihar and the Senior Superintendent of Police in Patna. They have asked for a detailed report on the incident within two weeks along with the health status of the affected children.

As per eyewitnesses, the children began vomiting and feeling dizzy after consuming the food which allegedly had a dead snake body. However, as per the preliminary reports, the doctors have not found any trace of poisonous substances in the children’s system. Some reports also suggest that the children refused to eat the contaminated food but were forced to eat it later.
This isn’t the first time a serious food contamination incident has rocked the country. Back in 2013, 23 children passed away after being served a meal laced with pesticides in Bihar’s Saran district. The unfortunate incident prompted the state government to focus on improving school food safety.
