Mumbai Metro Line 3: These 2 Stations Will Not Be Operational Till Another Year

Besides the local train system, Mumbai has a network of Metro Rail to make commuting easier. And this network is expanding, covering remote areas in the city. With Metro, Mumbaikars can travel to places in less time. After the inauguration of lines 2A and 7, the MMRC (Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation) is introducing Line 3 or Aqua Line 3 of Mumbai Metro. However, according to recent reports, two stations of this line will not be operational until 2024.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line) is next in line to be added to Mumbai’s vast commute network. The corridor is said to be commissioned in July 2024. However, the MMRC announced that two of the stations—Kalbadevi and Girgaum—won’t be operational for the first few months, after the commissioning of the entire corridor.

The Kalbadevi and Girgaum stations are included in Package 2, which includes the area from CSMT to Grant Road, of the project. Package 2 runs from BKC to Cuffe Parade.

According to MMRC Managing Director, Ashwini Bhide, the commissioning of the entire line won’t be stopped. The construction of two underground stations is difficult due to winding roads, narrow roads, decaying and even, historic buildings. In Girgaum-Kalbadevi, the construction has affected 420 residential units, 290 commercial buildings, 20 land parcels, and 30 buildings dispersed over six non-contiguous blocks.

The Aqua Line Of Mumbai Metro

Currently, the authorities are preparing for the launch of phase one of Aqua Line 3. Recently, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site to take a look at the process. Phase 1 has the following stations: Aarey Colony, SEEPZ, MIDC, Marol Naka, CSMIA T2, Sahar Road, Santacruz, Vidyanagri and BKC. Interestingly, Marol station was the most challenging as it intersected with Line 1. Therefore, it was necessary to take precautionary measures to not disturb it. However, the Phase 2 (or Package 2) of this line is still under construction. And Kalbadevi and Girgaum stations are a part of this phase.
