Top MMRDA officials have announced that Mumbai’s wait for the new metro lines will now end soon. The authorities are working on a plan, and if that works, the Mumbai metro might run earlier than expected. Since the commissioning of car sheds and depots is delayed, the authorities are actually planning to use pit stops for maintenance at end stations. MMRDA explained the reason behind the delay in commissioning.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) explained that the commissioning of car sheds is taking time because of various complexities like land acquisition delays and others.
Multiple Metro corridors are under construction, and the land needed for building car sheds for the corridors is also under procurement. This includes car sheds in Mogharpada (Green Line Metro 4), Kanjurmarg (Pink Line Metro 6), Uttan (Red Line Metro 9), and Kasheli (Orange Line Metro 5).
A top MMRDA official said that the work on car sheds has been speeded up in all places possible. Once the corridors are completed, with trials and approvals, they will start running them.
They will check if the idea to use pit stops at end stations for maintenance can initially be taken up. It is for now just a thought and they need to study it.

Currently, MMRDA is executing about 300 km of metro projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Mumbai. The execution is a very difficult task due to traffic congestion, slums, nighttime work, narrow roads, utilities, and other unavoidable issues.
Adding to this are the huge legal issues that they are facing during the execution of mega projects. This is leading to time overruns and cost escalation.
Mandale’s Yellow Line 2 car shed in Mankhurd is one of the biggest projects of Mumbai Metro. The megaproject is at an advanced stage of construction and is nearly 70 percent complete. This will support the entire Metro 2 line. It will operate between Andheri, Bandra, Dahisar East, and Mankhurd.
As the rakes that will arrive will be new, the officials believe that the initial maintenance work from the pit stops might work well. (As per Mid-day)
