BMC To Study Noise Levels On Mumbai’s ‘Music Road’ After Residents Complain About ‘Jai Ho’ Tunes

What might sound like ‘music’ to some has turned into a constant source of annoyance for others. We’re talking about India’s first musical road in Mumbai, located along a stretch of the Mumbai Coastal Road. Just weeks after its launch, residents of Breach Candy have complained about the continuous soundtrack and how it is disrupting their daily lives.

Locals Seek Relief From Mumbai’s Music Road Tune

For those unaware, a section of the Mumbai Coastal Road has been designed to play the Oscar-winning tune Jai Ho when vehicles pass over it at lower speeds. The initiative aimed to promote safe driving along the seafront expressway. However, according to The Guardian, the feature has soon turned into a nightmare for residents of the nearby Breach Candy area.

The report noted that while similar musical roads around the world are usually built in less populated areas, this one in Mumbai is located in a prominent residential neighbourhood. Annoyed by the constant music, which begins at 6 AM and continues until midnight, around 650 families have signed a formal complaint asking authorities to stop the tune. They described the continuous soundtrack as an “intrusive background noise” that is affecting their daily lives.

What Does BMC Have To Say About This?

Acknowledging residents’ complaints, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has taken action. According to a report by The Free Press Journal, they have ordered a noise decibel study after residents flagged the daily disturbance. They have asked a consultant to find a solution for the same as well.

India’s first musical road, along the Mumbai Coastal Road, was inaugurated on February 11. Now, in the letter addressed to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, the residents said, “We cannot keep our windows open. The sound fills our homes as a constant, muffled, yet intrusive background noise.”
