The 5.5 km-long Coastal Road Promenade opened in Mumbai on August 15, 2025. Now, just two months after its partial launch, two of the six planned modular bio-toilets have already been installed. The remaining four will open soon and ensure easy access to public amenities across the promenade. The Times of India reported that authorities have installed the new toilets near Public Underpasses (PUP) 11 and 14. PUP 11 is just opposite Worli Dairy, which also houses an underground public parking lot, while PUP 14 stands north of Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk on Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan Road in Worli, Mumbai.
For now, people can access the pedestrian subways along the promenade only from a few designated entry points — PUP No. 4 near the Akriti Parking Building on Bhulabhai Desai Road, PUP No. 6 at Vatsalabai Desai Chowk (Haji Ali Junction), PUP No. 11 near Worli Dairy, and PUP No. 14 at Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk. These Public Underpasses (PUPs) act as convenient connecting spots for pedestrians to cross or enter the promenade safely.
The new toilets are designed in a 20×12×8 feet layout, perfect to meet safety and hygiene needs. It features two toilet seats for women (one Western and one Indian), one child-sized Western seat. It also has one handicapped-accessible Western seat and one for men. Along with this, there are six urinals, three washbasins, three sensor mirrors, and three soap dispensers.
Not compromising with citizens’ hygiene, there is a system that operates on a 1kW solar power. The Times of India reported that a 1,000-litre water tank supports it, and a bio-digester tank with a 3,500-litre capacity manages the waste. The toilet has basic amenities like six exhaust fans, four windows for ventilation, an incinerator, and a sanitary pad vending machine for women.
Now, if you’re planning to visit Mumbai’s Coastal Road promenade, you no longer have to worry about personal hygiene or basic facilities.
