Why Is Mumbai Experiencing Rains Before The Official Monsoon Season? Here’s The Science Behind It

There is a lot of rain and thunderstorms in store for Mumbai in the coming days. It seems like the monsoon has arrived quite early for the city this year. But many people are wondering why it is happening even when the season has not completely started yet. You will be surprised to know that there is a reason behind this sudden weather change in Mumbai.

Rainy Weather In Mumbai Before The Arrival Of Monsoon

Mumbai is currently experiencing rainy weather without the official monsoon having arrived. The pre-monsoon showers are making the weather feel misty but also humid. Though many residents are happy as the rain has brought relief from the heat, many people are also questioning the sudden weather change.

According to India Today, on June 3, 2026, heavy rain lashed South Mumbai, while several regions such as Thane and Navi Mumbai received light showers. But why exactly is it raining heavily at this time in Mumbai?

Sometimes, before the monsoon arrives, the atmosphere brings heavy rain and storms known as pre-monsoon showers. These rains are usually short and occur because of weeks of high temperatures that warm the ground and, yes, the sea. Moist air near the surface rises rapidly. As it rises, it cools and turns into clouds and rain. This is pretty much the science behind the early rains in the city.

Other Factors Behind Mumbai’s Pre-Monsoon Rain

But yes, there are some other factors that can contribute to these pre-monsoon showers too. According to India Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the southwest monsoon to arrive in Mumbai soon, following its arrival in Kerala.

The southwest monsoon officially arrived in Kerala on June 4, marking the beginning of the country’s four-month rainy season. Apart from this, sea breezes from the Arabian Sea also clash with warm inland air. Dust and pollution particles can help water droplets form faster, while passing weather disturbances can add extra lift to the air. The result? Rainfall.

Yes, the rainfall might feel good, but continuous downpours can cause waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and even flight delays.
