Cinema Akil, the GCC’s only independent cinema, is about to make history by hosting a prestigious film festival. It will be marking its inaugural foray into the Middle East. This exciting collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi represents a remarkable cultural milestone for the region. It is bringing globally renowned cinema to its doorstep.

From September 15th to 21st, Cinema Akil will be the heart of cinematic excellence. The seven-day extravaganza will feature screenings of beloved classics as part of the festival’s presentation. In a remarkable partnership, Cinema Akil is joining hands with Cineteca di Bologna. It is a leading European archive dedicated to film restoration and preservation. Also, it has the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, founded by the legendary Martin Scorsese on display.

The inaugural edition of ‘Il Cinema Ritrovato On Tour’ at Cinema Akil promises to be a cinematic feast. It will showcase seven iconic heritage films. All are digitally restored by Cineteca di Bologna in their cutting-edge laboratory, L’Immagine Ritrovata. This collection has never graced the screens of the region before. So, this offers an enthralling journey through the evolution of Italian, Indian, Moroccan, Iranian, and Angolan cinema over time.

The festival’s curtain raiser will be the timeless neorealistic masterpiece, ‘Sciuscià’ (Shoeshine), directed by Vittorio De Sica showcasing the power of neorealism in cinema. Following this, the festival will screen ‘Sambizanga,’ a narrative chronicling Angola’s journey towards independence and the fierce fight for freedom, directed by Sarah Maldoror, one of Africa’s pioneering female directors.

Tickets for these cinematic treasures are available for purchase. The tickets are priced at Dhs50 per screening. For ardent vintage cinema enthusiasts, there’s an option to acquire a season pass at Dhs175. This will grant access to all the screenings in the festival’s lineup.
