The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious movie events that celebrates the film industries around the world. And it was announced on Thursday, April 11 that for the first time ever, a Saudi film has been named in the Cannes Film Festival’s official selection. Yes, we are talking about Norah, which is the film entirely based in AlUla and here is all about this historical moment.

Norah Become First Saudi Film To Be Selected In Cannes Film Festival

Creating history in the 77 years of the Cannes Film Festival, for the first time ever, a Saudi Arabian film has been selected. Norah has created history by being included in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of the French Film Festival. And for those who aren’t aware, it recognises new talents and unconventional narratives. Not to mention, it runs alongside the famous Palme D’Or competition. At this point, it’s worth mentioning that the film will be competing against 19 other names from around the world.

What Is The Movie About?

Norah is a film that was directed by Tawfik Alzaidi. Set in 1990s Saudi Arabia, this movie captures the story of Nader, a failed artist during the conservativism rule. After becoming a school teacher, he assists a talented young girl to help her realise her artistic potential in an oppressive rural setting.

Recently Saudi Lifted 35-Year Ban On Cinema

Coming back to the landmark achievement, this development comes shortly after Saudi Arabia lifted its 35-year ban on cinema in 2017. So, ever since this lifting of the ban, the film industry here, has been building a strong relationship with the Cannes Film Festival. Yes, it also sent its first delegation there in 2018.

On a concluding note, for those who are curious, the Film Festival will be running from May 14th to 25th.
