Not Carolina Reaper, Pepper X Wins The Title Of World’s Hottest Chilli Pepper

Attention spice enthusiasts! There’s a hot new pepper in town and it might just be the hottest one around, quite literally so. The Carolina Reaper is no longer the world’s hottest chilli pepper! It has been replaced by a new chilli pepper which is named Pepper X. It is now officially recognised by The Guinness Book Of World Records. Here are all the details that you need to know about this new spiciest pepper!

Pepper X Wins The Title Of World’s Hottest Chilli Pepper

With a Scoville Heat Unit or SHU of 2,693,000, Pepper X is now the world’s hottest chilli pepper! It has officially dethroned Carolina Reaper which has a SHU of 1.64 million. This means that the Pepper X is three times spicier than the Carolina Reaper! It was officially recognised by The Guinness Book Of World Record on October 16.

According to the official website of The Guinness Book Of World Records, the SHU of Pepper X was measured by Winthrop University which is located in South Carolina. The calculation utilised specimens of the pepper and was calculated over a period of four years. The SHU is calculated based on the capsaicin level of a chilli.

The more capsaicin it has, the spicier the chilli. It is also popularly believed that the seeds of the chilli peppers are what make the chilli spicy. However, the article goes on to bust that myth and states that the spiciness actually comes from the chilli’s placenta on which the seeds grow. The larger it is, the spicier your chilli will be.

The website also notes that the pepper has ridges and curves which give the placenta more space to grow. It was created by Ed Currie who was also the creator of the Carolina Reaper, the chilli pepper which previously held the title of the spiciest chilli pepper in the world. Pepper X took ten years to create and Currie managed to do it by cross-breeding.

Ed Currie is also the founder of Puckerbutt Pepper Company which is based in the United States of America or the US. According to the official website of The Guinness Book Of World, Currie does more than 100 cross-breeds every year. However, no more than two manage through the development cycle that takes ten years.

He is now working on a pepper that will be even spicier than this one and hopes to break his own record someday soon.
