From Bahrain’s 1st Indoor Ski Academy To Self-Driving Shuttle In Madinah, 5 GCC Updates

The GCC had one of those weeks where every country seemed to roll out something completely different. One place is testing self-driving buses near a mosque, another is building an indoor ski academy, while students in the UAE suddenly have scholarship deadlines to think about. Honestly, the region keeps moving fast lately. Sometimes too fast to keep up with properly. Here’s a quick look at some of the updates people across the GCC have been talking about.

1. Saudi Arabia Is Testing A RoboBus Near A Mosque

In Madinah, Saudi authorities have started testing a self-driving RoboBus at the Quba Mosque. The electric shuttle runs along a 700-metre route and can carry up to 20 passengers at a time. It uses sensors, cameras and LiDAR systems to move around safely without a driver. For many visitors, seeing a fully automated vehicle operating near one of Islam’s most historic sites probably feels slightly surreal. But Saudi Arabia clearly wants to push further into AI and smart transport systems. The trial will continue for around 60 days while officials study how people interact with the service and whether similar systems could work elsewhere.

2.UAE Students Now Have A New Scholarship Option

Meanwhile in Dubai, applications have officially opened for the Mohammed bin Rashid Scholarship for Emirati Media Students. The programme supports students studying at American University in Dubai through the Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication. Courses include journalism, digital storytelling, production and even game design, which honestly says a lot about how media careers are changing now. Applications stay open until June 30, 2026.

3. Oman’s Botanic Garden Keeps Collecting Awards

Over in Muscat, Oman Botanic Garden picked up another major recognition after receiving an Urban Compliance Certificate for its Dhofar Mountains Biome. The project already holds several LEED Platinum certifications, and this latest recognition adds to Oman’s growing focus on sustainable public developments. Also, the biome reportedly earned the highest score within the garden itself so far.

4. Bahrain Wants To Teach How To Ski Indoors

Dividend Gate Capital announced plans to launch Bahrain’s first indoor ski academy in partnership with an international operator. The idea is to introduce structured skiing lessons for children and younger athletes without families needing to travel abroad first. For many GCC residents, skiing holidays have become increasingly popular over recent years. Bahrain now seems interested in bringing part of that experience closer to home.

5. Qatar Is Expanding Sports Events

In Qatar, the Qatar Olympic Committee signed a new agreement with Mall of Qatar to organise sporting events and community programmes.

The partnership includes Olympic Day 2026, boxing events and future eFIBA Finals. That said, the bigger picture here is probably about getting more people involved in sports and healthier activities generally, especially younger age groups.

And honestly, between robots, skiing and esports, GCC updates are starting to sound less predictable every month.
