With a penetration rate of about 98% and with over 8 crore users, FASTag has truly changed the face of driving and electronic toll collection systems in India. People, however, were facing issues like linking the FASTag of one vehicle to many others or using more than one FASTag on a single vehicle. So, in January 2024, the NHAI announced its initiative of ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’.

NHAI believes this will help discourage the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a particular vehicle. The compliance of this rule was delayed to March-end due to the issues faced by Paytm FASTag users. Therefore, the NHAI was forced to delay the implementation till April.

Here are a few things FASTag users need to keep in mind with regard to the One Vehicle, One FASTag rule.

  1. To begin with, NHAI has urged all users to complete their ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) process in accordance with the RBI guidelines. In failing to do so, the FASTag will get deactivated/blacklisted by banks post-February 29, 2024.
  2. You can recharge your FASTag from any bank! This rule simply deters individuals from acquiring multiple FASTags. You are free to recharge your FASTag using any bank and payment methods like BBPS, UPI, net banking, etc.
  3. To check if your vehicle is linked with multiple FASTags or not, you can visit NPCI’s website here, add in the required details, and check your vehicle’s status.
  4. In case of an incomplete KYC, you will receive notification via email, SMS, or through issuing bank’s application interface regarding the same.
  5. If you haven’t updated your KYC after two years of completion, then you will be restricted from recharging your wallet.
