Odisha Floods: 13 Dead, 9.4 Lakh Affected, Schools Shut; CM Announces ₹1,000 Crore Relief Package

Heavy rain has caused floods situation across several parts of Odisha. The floods have affected lakhs of people, while authorities continue rescue and relief efforts.

Heavy rain can disrupt everyday life, and Odisha is now facing its impact. Floodwaters have affected several parts of the state, leaving thousands of people struggling and losing their lives. Read the latest update. 

Odisha Flood Death Toll Rises 

In Odisha, five more people have lost their lives, taking the death toll to 13. According to Hindustan Times, among these five people, three died due to wall collapses and two due to drowning. The floods have affected over 9.40 lakh people across 1,300 villages in six Odisha districts. These include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Kendrapada. As per The Print, seeing the condition, the Odisha CM has announced a ₹1,000 crore relief package for these areas.

In Keonjhar, Bhaktabandhu Mahanta was swept away by floodwater while going to his agricultural land. His body was later found in bushes near Patrasahi ghat. In Jajpur, an 11-year-old boy drowned after slipping on a submerged road in Ichhapur village. His family rescued him and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

In Balasore, a wall collapsed onto a house in Kapasuda village, killing 65-year-old Radhika Jena and her 18-year-old grandson. Her son and two-month-old granddaughter were injured. In Mayurbhanj, a neighbouring wall collapsed on Birabhadra Mohanta and his wife Hemalata. Rescuers pulled them out using a JCB, but Hemalata later died. Birabhadra was seriously injured.

Schools Shut Down

Due to floods in Odisha, schools and Anganwadi centres have shut down in Bhadrak, Sundargarh and Jajpur. In Bhadrak, 268 schools and 567 Anganwadi centres remained closed. Jajpur also shut government, private and Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya schools. Authorities asked parents to keep children indoors and away from flooded areas for their safety.

Around 300 students at Kulasahi Ashram Residential School in Kendrapara remained stranded for the third day. Floodwater surrounded the campus and affected access to food, drinking water and toilets. Students also reported seeing snakes. Authorities moved them to the first and second floors. Meanwhile, 531 relief camps and 99 rescue teams are supporting flood-hit areas.
