Imagine the scene: the sky still tinged with the hues of dawn, the early morning air filled with anticipation. Suddenly, one by one, the balloons begin their ascent. Leading the way is the official Lord Mayor’s Appeal balloon, with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress aboard, setting the stage for a day filled with wonder.

This colourful parade of balloons drifts over some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London, and Tower Bridge. The sight is nothing short of magical, turning an ordinary morning into an unforgettable experience.

For 2024, the regatta is scheduled for three potential dates to ensure optimal weather conditions: July 7th, July 21st, and July 28th. The event kicks off around 5:30 AM, capitalising on the calm early morning winds for a smooth and safe flight.

While you can’t join the launch in Battersea Park, there are plenty of prime spots across the city to catch the display. Here are some top recommendations:

  • Primrose Hill: Offers a panoramic view of the city skyline.
  • Greenwich Park: Combines historical charm with excellent sightlines.
  • Alexandra Palace: A bit further out, but the elevated position provides a stunning perspective.
  • Along the River Thames: Various spots along the river offer clear views of the balloons as they drift by.

The regatta is more than a visual delight; it’s a key fundraiser for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, a charitable initiative that supports local causes across London. Since its inception in 2015, the event has grown not only in scale but also in significance. Each year, the funds raised contribute to mental health, social inclusion, and education projects.

Inspired by the rich tradition of hot air ballooning in the UK, the Lord Mayor’s Hot Air Balloon Regatta began as a creative way to harness the spectacle of ballooning for a good cause. Over the years, it has become a beloved tradition, eagerly anticipated by Londoners and visitors alike.

Whether you’re a lifelong Londoner or a visitor, witnessing the balloons’ ascent against the backdrop of the city’s historic landmarks is a sight that will stay with you forever.
