Over 500 Fall Ill In Vietnam After Popular Sandwich, Bánh Mi Sparks Food Poisoning Scare

A beloved Vietnamese staple has turned into a source of stomach woes for hundreds. Over 500 people in southern Vietnam have been hospitalised with suspected food poisoning after consuming bánh mì, a popular baguette sandwich, from a bakery in Long Khanh town, Dong Nai province.

The outbreak began on April 30th, with reports of individuals experiencing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea after enjoying the supposedly light and refreshing lunch option. By May 2nd, the number of those affected had ballooned to over 560, with local hospitals struggling to accommodate the influx of patients. Thankfully, around 200 individuals have since recovered and been discharged. However, the situation remains serious, with 12 people, including two young boys, currently in critical condition.

Authorities suspect the culprit may be spoilt ingredients used in the bánh mì fillings. The scorching Vietnamese heatwave could have accelerated bacterial growth in meats, pâté, or unwashed vegetables commonly used in the sandwich. The bakery in question, located on Tran Quang Dieu Street, has been promptly shut down by local authorities. An initial inspection revealed concerning hygiene lapses, suggesting the establishment may not have been adhering to proper food safety protocols.

This incident has cast a shadow over the usually vibrant street food scene in Vietnam. Bánh mì, a delightful combination of crusty bread, savoury fillings, and fresh herbs, is a national treasure and a go-to option for both locals and tourists. The outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of food safety regulations and hygiene practices, particularly for vendors operating in hot and humid climates.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning. Food samples have been collected from the bakery and are undergoing analysis to identify the specific contaminant. This will not only aid in treating current patients effectively but also help prevent similar outbreaks in the future.

The Vietnamese health ministry has issued a public health advisory. People should exercise caution when purchasing street food and ensure vendors maintain proper hygiene standards. Tourists are advised to patronise reputable establishments and avoid stalls with questionable cleanliness.
