Pakistan Govt Legalises Medicinal Marijuana; A Bid To Generate Revenue

The government of Pakistan has legalised medicinal marijuana which, many reports suggest, will help in generating revenue. Amid economic distress, the country is looking for new ways to generate revenue. Hence, legalising the consumption of marijuana for medicinal purposes is being done. Earlier this year, the Pakistani government also formed the Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority or CCRA to control and regulate the cultivation and distribution of marijuana in the country.

According to an article which was recently published by India Today, this legalisation of medicinal marijuana will allow the country to export cannabis derivatives. This may help in alleviating the economic crisis that has plagued the country since May 2022.

In February, the CCRA was formulated after an ordinance was passed. It is hoped that conducive weather conditions in Pakistan will aid in making the most of this opportunity and compete in the global cannabis market.

The CCRA will consist of a total of 13 members. The formation of this regulatory body has been in the pipeline since 2020 when the Prime Minister was still Imran Khan. Officials are aware of the potential misuse of the drug but cite its benefits as justification for the move.

If reports are to go by, the economic crisis that the country is witnessing right now is the worst that it has seen since its independence. It is hoped that entering the global marijuana market will help in generating revenue.

In addition to this, there are now strict fines imposed if misuse of the drug is found. Those fines, too, are hoped to help in generating revenue. Only licensed distributors will be allowed to dispense medicinal marijuana and any over-the-counter dispensation will be penalised.

Many people view this move as a welcome one because it promises a potential way to ease economic strife. However, whether Pakistan is able to compete in the global market remains to be seen.
