Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Clears 180 Kmph Trial & A Water Test; Why Is This Test Conducted?

It’s good news from Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat sleeper train has successfully passed its high-speed trial test with flying colours. The train ran at 180 kmph on the Kota-Nagda section and also underwent a ‘water test’ to check its stability. Here’s everything you need to know about what the water test is and why it is conducted.

Water Test Conducted On Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw recently took to X to share another milestone for India. On December 30, the new-generation Vande Bharat sleeper train was tested by the Commissioner of Railway Safety. It ran at 180 kmph between Kota and Nagda stations. The post was accompanied by a video shot inside the train. The mobile screen in the video showed the speed touching 182 kmph, with glasses filled with water stacked one on top of the other.

Even at such high speeds, the water-filled glasses remained stable, and not a single drop spilt. Surprising, right? This demonstration is known as the water test. But aren’t you curious to know what it is? A water test involves placing glasses filled to the brim with water on a flat surface. On trains, these glasses are usually kept on tray tables while the train is in motion. The test checks how stable the train remains at high speeds.

Why Is The Water Test Conducted?

The water test demonstrates key engineering and technological aspects of a train. It shows stability and the train’s ability to absorb track vibrations. Minimal movement of water indicates fewer jolts, which directly improves passenger comfort during journeys. In the recent Vande Bharat sleeper train test, the water did not spill even at high speed. This clearly shows the train’s advanced design.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper trains are expected to transform overnight rail travel in India. They will offer higher speeds, improved comfort, and modern facilities for long-distance passengers. These trains are set to become operational soon.
