Red Alert Issued In Rainstorm Hit Spain; 70 Flights Cancelled At Barcelona Airport Due To Flooding

Barcelona is facing a red alert warning due to potential torrential rains and flooding in several city areas. This is Spain’s worst flash flood in modern history and resulted in 217 fatalities, mostly in the Valencia region and over 60 in Paiporta. Hundreds are still missing. The storm in Barcelona caused 70 flights to be suspended and 18 to be diverted at the flood-hit Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

Barcelona Airport Gets Flooded

As reported by The Independent, in addition to possible rains in flood-ravaged Valencia, Spain’s weather forecaster Aena forecasted that Barcelona would get an extra five inches of rain on Monday. Recent rainfall caused flooding at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, forcing at least 70 flights to be cancelled and 18 to be diverted. Social media posts with pictures and videos shed light on the situation.

The floods affected the T-1 terminal and parking facilities, causing passengers to stay away from these areas while the airport staff cleared the water and restored normal operations. As one plane aborted a landing and the few remaining planes on the tarmac were forced to muck through several inches of flood water, footage from the city showed the runway entirely submerged.

The storm has caused significant disruptions at the airport, leading to significant delays and urging passengers to check their flight status online and prepare for potential delays as the airport continues to manage the floods’ impact.

Vehicles Submerged, Roads Inundated & Chaos Ensued

In a shopping centre in Valencia, floodwaters have caused pandemonium, trapping numerous victims in their cars on highways and underground in areas like garages, tunnels, and parking lots. While police have confirmed that none of the first 50 vehicles surveyed at the scene contained any victims, sources indicate that these vehicles were located close to the parking lot entrance, with the majority of the remaining vehicles still submerged and unexplored, as reported by the BBC.

Furthermore, the Bonaire shopping centre in Aldaia was surrounded by rotting debris and noisy generators pumping water from the mall car park. The perceived lack of notice and inadequate assistance from authorities sparked anger in response to the floods.
