Redditor Slams Bengaluru Brewery For Forcing Customer To Pay Service Charge; Says, “Don’t Let Restaurants Bully You”

While the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has deemed service charge levied by restaurants as optional and voluntary, restaurants continue to collect service charge along with the food bill. On being asked to remove the optional charge, certain restaurants blatantly refuse. A Redditor recently shared an experience where they were forcibly asked to pay service charge at a Bengaluru brewery.

A Redditor @ChaiPeelo07 took to the forum to share their “terrible experience” at Aurum Brew Works located on Sarjapur Road. The customer booked a 30% off offer on Swiggy Discount on March 19 by shelling out ₹60 for two people. On arriving at the brewery, the diner was informed that if they availed of the Swiggy offer, they must mandatorily pay the 10 per cent service charge levied by the brewery.

In their defence, they argued that service charge is optional in the first place. However, the receptionist approached them and stated that they must pay the charge if they avail of the Swiggy discount. When the diners refused to pay the charge they were asked to speak to the manager. The Redditor said the manager was rude and asked them to leave if they weren’t ready to pay the service charge. However, the diner decided to take the matter to the consumer court. After finishing their meal and receiving the bill, the Redditor showed the Aurum Brew Works staff, a consumer court document.

The manager rudely took back the bill and removed the service charge. He stated to the Redditot that he didn’t want to spoil their day, so he revoked the charges. However, he could also show legal documents that direct restaurants to levy service charges. While the Redditor isn’t against paying service charges, it was important to stand up for what was right.

Attaching a link to the official consumer court document, the Bengalurean asked diners to be aware and not let restaurants bully them into paying unnecessary charges.

Many Redditors hailed Bengaluru for standing up for what’s right. Some even slammed Aurum Brew Work for forcing diners to pay additional charges.
