Famous for rigorous courses, top-performing students, and first-rate facilities, this university is the sole domain of the globe’s wealthiest families. The most costly school in the world, as reported in the Spear’s Schools Index 2024, is Switzerland’s Institut auf dem Rosenberg, an expensive boarding school that costs an eye-watering $176,000 (₹1.5 crore) per year.
This eclipses the fees of most top schools, including those linked to India’s most affluent families. Located on the shores of Lake Constance in St. Gallen, Switzerland, Institut auf dem Rosenberg has become the world’s most exclusive school for the world’s most elite students.
It has trained diplomats, industrialists, and international nobility since 1889.
What Makes Institut Auf Dem Rosenberg So Exclusive?
Rosenberg is not about high costs only; it’s a unique personal education system tailor-made for unique student needs. Unlike traditional curricula, students are assigned an individualised academic plan based on their area of strength and academic interest in academics, arts, sports, or business.
It also has 28 co-curricular facilities, which include the SAGA Habitat and ETH Zurich greenhouse, to allow students to study engineering and agricultural fields. The 25-hectare main campus is located amidst scenic landscapes and even boasts ‘wind trees’, a green energy-efficient feature.
With only 280 students from 60 nations, Rosenberg maintains exclusivity by recruiting students on grounds of ‘unusual merit’, and mid-year intake is quite exceptional.

Institut auf dem Rosenberg has a very strong focus on personality development and holistic education. It instils civic responsibility, compassion, and integrity through learning opportunities, community service, and leadership development.
The school won ‘World’s Best Boarding School’ by Premium Switzerland in 2024 and is repeatedly ranked among the top 10 Swiss international schools. It also doesn’t take any donations or grants from the outside and keeps its top ranking intact.
With its ultra-personalised education, world-class facilities, and extremely selective admissions, Institut auf dem Rosenberg is still the crème de la crème school of the world’s elite families.
