Diwali, the festival of lights is just around the corner. But what does Diwali mean to you? Yes, there’s the triumph of good over evil, rituals, glimmering fireworks and homemade sweets. More often than not what sticks around is the opportunities to celebrate the festive season with our loved ones. Bollywood’s powerhouse of talent Seema Pahwa, Brijendra Kala, Virendra Saxena, and Aaditi S Pohankar share what Diwali means to them.

Seema Pahwa Celebrates A Unique Family Tradition

Seema Pahwa, the multifaceted talent who has often lit up the screen with her power-packed performances in films like Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Savdhaan and also directed Zee Theatre’s widely acclaimed literary anthology, Koi Baat Chale shared how she celebrates Diwali.

Seema Pahwa said that for her Diwali was about relishing sweets, cooking delicious meals, doing puja, decorating her home and getting clothes tailored. She calls it the perfect way to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Seema Pahwa further reveals a heartwarming childhood family tradition where her father would place money in her hand on Diwali night. She found it delightful to wake up with a coin in her hand. And believes in carrying forward such memorable traditions and creating happy memories for her kids.

Virendra Saxena, a theatre, film and television veteran who has worked in films like Bheed and Mission Raniganj and also starred in Zee Theatre’s popular teleplay Jana Tha Roshanpura, believes there’s a big difference in the way people in small towns and big cities celebrate the festival of lights. He remembers watching Ramleela in a colourful and lively crowd growing up. However, in a city like Mumbai, he believes people must get together with friends and relatives to share meals and celebrate the occasion for a community feeling.

For Brijendra Kala, a theatre and cinema veteran who starred in films like Sherni and Ankhon Dekhi and also teleplays like Boichek and The Will, Diwali is steeped in nostalgia. He reminisces that as a child, Diwali was all about lighting fireworks. However, things have evolved and nowadays people refrain from the same. Diwali is a festival that reminds him that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Isn’t this beautiful?

The actress says that festivals like Diwali bring everyone together irrespective of their caste, creed and social status. People should use this day as an opportunity to make an effort to help someone in need. Aaditi still remembers the joy in the face of her househelp when she brought gifts for her and her family.
