The obsession with selfies is taking a crazy toll as a study revealed that the world recorded 127 selfie related deaths in the world, 76 being in India!
What Is It?
According to analytics run by Carnegie Mellon University and Indraprastha Institute of Information, Delhi, the world has experienced 127 selfie related deaths since 2014, and 76 of which have been from India. This data has been collected March 2014 to September 2016. Basically, out of 127 selfie accidents in the world, India accounts for 60% of the deaths! So why is this happening? For the sake of capturing that perfect selfie, Indians are risking their lives. And all this for a few likes and comments on social media? It’s absolutely not worth it!
What Is To Be Done?
Selfies have killed more number of people in India than any other country! Keeping this statistic in mind, the Indian government is going to create no-selfie zones at Indian tourist attractions to keep everyone safe. As part of the rule, the government is now identifying tourist spots that are more prone to cause selfie related accidents and then encourage the tourists to be safer and not whip out their phones at those spots. To capture the perfect snap, tourists get careless about their precious life so this rule will be to raise awareness about self accidents and protect the people.
Researchers at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, New Delhi have developed a smart app called as Saftie that helps identify dangerous tourist spots for selfies. Through this app, the Mumbai Police has identified 16 spots near beaches and forts in Mumbai, whereas the Maharashtra Police has identified 29 such spots across the state. Along with that, Goa has also identified 24 no-selfie zones.
