Tripura is one of the most beautiful hilly states in India’s northeast. One of the popular tourist spots in this state is the majestic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala. This three-storeyed mansion is a state museum and is surrounded by lovely Mughal gardens. In a bid to boost tourism in this state, the government has planned to create a “weekend tourist hub” around the palace.

The Ujjayanta Palace in Tripura stands right in the heart of Agartala city. It was built in 1862 by the erstwhile prince Chandra Manikya. Since 2013, the palace has housed a state museum and is one of the main attractions for tourists visiting the state.

The century-old structure’s front side has been declared the “weekend tourist hub”. Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury informed that the plan was approved in the cabinet meeting.

Vehicles will not be allowed to use the road near the palace on Saturdays and Sundays from 4pm to 9pm. This includes the stretch from Lakshmi Narayan Temple to Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan and the stretch from the front of the palace to Jackson Gate.

The roads leading to the palace will have food stalls and separate stalls for flowers and traditional items.

Cultural Programs, Illumination And More

As the front side of the Ujjayanta Palace in Tripura will be converted into a “weekend tourist hub”, it will also hold numerous fun programs for tourists. On weekends, tourists can expect many cultural programs in the hub.

There will be songs and traditional dances performed for the tourists. The sound and light systems inside the palace will also be renovated. People can also expect illumination throughout the entire palace premises.

The state museum, which depicts the beauty of the state’s cultural heritage, will also be open to the public. For the front side of the palace, a beautification drive has already been initiated. One can also enjoy boating in the lake of the palace.

With this new initiative, the department aims to generate revenue for the government as well as employment opportunities.
