Venturing beyond the staple filter kaapi served at darshinis, Karnataka is witnessing an increased demand for specialised and customised coffee. From organic coffee to region-specific brews to perfumed roasts like vanilla, coffee is enjoying the limelight in the state. This time, specialty brews are enjoying the spotlight. To cater to the growing demand for specialty coffee, Karnataka is taking the lead in India to harvest and brew the specialised roasts.
Karnataka Coffee Board Leans On Specialty & Customised Coffee Trend
As per a report by The New Indian Express, Karnataka Coffee Board is tapping into the growing market for specialised and customised coffee. Going beyond the traditional filter kaapi, the state is known for, Karnataka Coffee Board is now focusing on harvesting and brewing roasts for the domestic and international consumers.
While Brazil continues to be the frontrunner in coffee production, India’s focus now lies on producing quality blends across wide variants. Recently, Coffee Board of India hosted a meeting with Karnataka famers and brewers. The attendees also included officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of External Affairs. The stakeholders held discussions on how embassies can promote specialised coffee.
MJ Dinesh, the Coffee Board Chairman shed insights on the meeting to TNIE. He stated that they are working on understanding the international consumer market to propogate customised and specialised coffee. Moreover, the officials were combing through 15-18 countries to carry out pilot studies to sell coffee on a large scale.

Rise In Region-Specific Brews & Organic Coffee Harvest
While coffeee is a traditional commodity in Karnataka, when improvised the beverage becomes unique. With the international specialised coffee market at 3-5%, the domestic market’s growth is more promising. Coffee Board of India will focus on expanding the specialised coffee brands that have already become a popular name domestically and globally. Also, there will be special focus laid on harvesting and promoting organic coffee. For this, subsidies will be given to stakeholders involved in cultivation and marketing.
In India, coffee lovers can sip on wine coffee, vanilla coffee and even cocoa coffee. Gaining popularity are region-specific brews like Araku and Pushpagiri. With second and third generations of coffee growers taking interest in the business there has been a growing trend for experimentation. Traditional coffee are being improved while new ones are being harvested in Karnataka. The demand for specialised and customised coffee is rapidly increasing.
As per the report by TNIE, there are 4 lakh coffee growers in India. South India has 2.5 lakh and Karnataka alone has 1.5 lakh. States like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Nagaland and Assam now have one lakh hectares of coffee plantations. With coffee being grown in new areas especially tribal spots, organic coffee is having its moment
