Step Inside This Historical Hotel In Zanzibar That Once Hosted Mahatma Gandhi, Freddie Mercury & More

The allure of Zanzibar Island in Tanzania is ever-persisting. White sands and turquoise waters surround the island while Indian, Arabic and Persian influences intertwine in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zanzibar continues to be a favourite destination for Indians for a long time. Before Gandhiji returned to India in January 1915, Zanzibar finds a mention in his autobiography during his South Africa days. And this restored 19th-century hotel of Zanzibar even once housed Gandhi. Called the Tembo House Hotel, this seafront space hosted the likes of Freddie Mercury, Indira Gandhi and more.

A historic hotel, it once served as the American Consulate in 1834 and later as the premises of Cowasjee Dinshaw and Partners, a famous trading company in the western Indian Ocean in 1884. And finally settling down as luxurious sea-front property, located in Stone Town.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town is known for its historic architecture, narrow streets, and vibrant markets. You can even explore the town on foot, taking in the sights and sounds of this unique and charming place. Well, the location of the hotel also helps, being close to a number of attractions, including the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, and the Forodhani Gardens.

However, the most distinct and striking feature of the Tembo House Hotel would be the residence of the legendary musician, Freddie Mercury. People are often surprised to learn the fact that Mercury was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar. This historic centre of Zanzibar is dubbed the Mercury House and is also inside the Tembo House Hotel. Many historians believe that as a child, Mercury spent his holidays at this home.

The ‘Freddie Mercury Apartments’ in Tembo House Hotel, however, is located across the road from the hotel at the original Freddie Mercury House. The space houses two spacious bedroom units with hammam baths and a shower. It also features a balcony with city views with an Arabic-style seating area.

The hotel features a mix of traditional Zanzibari and modern decor, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere for guests. There are five different types of suites with its own unique character and allure.  The rooms feature traditional Zanzibari furnishings, combined with modern amenities. Some of them even offer stunning sea views, making them ideal for those looking for a bit of luxury.

Adding to the beauty of the Tembo House Hotel is the Bahari Restaurant. Lined with colourful windows, the space overlooks the Indian Ocean. The seating varies from chairs to sofas that in decades before would have enthralled the Sultans with their intricately curved designs.
