Study: 4 Lakh Indians Will Die Before They Get Their US Green Card; Here’s Why

The backlog for employment-based green cards in the United States of America or the US has reached a new record. According to a think tank based in the US, Cato Institute, the US currently has a whopping 1.8 million or 18 lakh cases pending. Owing to this, around four lakh Indians will die before they receive their US green card. This dire prospect is primarily due to the low caps for the green card that each country is entitled to as per the country’s law.

According to the research by Cato Insitute, around four lakh Indians will die before they get their US green cards. There are around 18 lakh cases pending with the US officials. Around 63 per cent or 11 lakh cases are from India alone.

The wait time for all the cases is around 134 years, according to an article recently published by NDTV. This issue of the long waiting period is growing into a crisis. Despite the best efforts of Indian-American lawmakers, it seems that the issue cannot be helped.

The institute even went so far as to say that owing to such massive backlogs, legally immigrating to the US via the employment-based card is effectively impossible.

The employment-based green card or the permanent resident card is a document that allows an employed US immigrant to permanently reside in the country. The US employs a high number of Chinese as well as Indians for techie and software jobs.

However, as per US law, only seven per cent of the permanent resident cards may be given to one country per year. This rule was created so that other countries get a fair chance at getting green cards. However, this has also adversely affected Indians who are now stuck in limbo, waiting for their cards to arrive.
