Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual (known as a surfer) rides the waves using a surfboard. Surfing is one of the most popular extreme sports in the world. It is getting popular among Indians too. There are some amazing spots in the country along the coast for surfers. If you are a beginner and keen on learning this sport, here are the 5 top places in India to learn surfing.

1. Mulki, Karnataka

Mulki is a small village about 30 minutes from Mangalore. The beach here is unexplored and hence is very less crowded with waves that suit new learners. It is home to the club that made history as India’s first surf club, Mantra Surf Club. with the best surfers as mentors, they also have a huge inventory of surfboards to choose from.

2. Pondicherry

The surfing season in Pondicherry is 7-8 months long starting from June. The waves during this season go up to 12 feet high. Two long Piers were built at the Serenity beach to safeguard the beach after the deadly tsunami in 2004. Kallialay Surf School situated on Serenity beach is the best place to learn surfing in Pondicherry.

3. Goa

Goa is known for its beaches and parties. But little did you know that this place also has some ideal spots for surfers to learn surfing. October to April is the surfing season. Surf Wala, Goa’s first surf school that was started by international surfers is the best place to get your lessons from.

4. Kovalam Beach, Kerala

Kovalam Beach is believed to be a well-known surf spot in India. It is the best for beginners. Kovalam Surf Club which was founded in 2005, is the place you should go to learn surfing if you happen to be in Kerala. It offers surfing classes at a much cheaper rate than other schools as it comes under an NGO.

5. Gokarna, Karnataka

Gokarna is the temple town of Karnataka. Its calm beaches make it the best place to learn for surfers at the beginners level from October to May. Cocopelli Surf School which is on Long beach has various courses from beginners to advanced level to offer.
