And so, people often go out of their way to get their hands on such items that they believe will bring in good fortune. In a similar case, a temple in Tamil Nadu recently auctioned nine lemons for ₹2.36 lakhs on March 26. Believed by devotees to cure infertility, here is all you need to know about this auction, which is an age-old practice.

A Murugan temple in the Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu auctioned nine sacred lemons for a whopping ₹2.36 lakhs. The authority auctioned these nine lemons after they were kept on the deity’s spear in the temple. A major reason why these lemons are sold at such a hefty price is that it is believed to cure infertility. Yes, in a report by Wion, it was also revealed that devotees also believed that it would bring prosperity to the family when consumed.

This Is An Age-Old Practice at The Temple

So, devotees who consumed the lemonade made from these lemons would not only be cured of infertility but even bring prosperity to their families. People strongly believe that these lemons that are spiked on the spear of Lord Murugan have magical powers. As it happens, this temple is famous for its sacred lemons! In fact, couples who are childless throng to Lord Murugan’s temple during the annual Panguni Uthiram festival. For those who are wondering, this small temple is situated at the confluence of two hillocks at Tiruvanainallur village in Villupuram.

It’s worth mentioning that these lemons are spiked on the first day of the nine-day festival. After this, the lemons which are considered to be auspicious and powerful are sold to the devotees at an exorbitant price. In fact, last year the lemon was purchased by a couple for ₹50,500. During the nine days, each day the lemons are changed by the priest.

At this point, it should be mentioned that those who are successful in bidding have to first take a holy bath and kneel before the priest. After which, they are handed over the lemons, after kneeling before the temple priest.
