The Diwali season is one of the busiest ones for Indian Railways. Millions of people travel to and from major cities to be with their families during the festivities. Keeping this high demand in mind, the Indian Railways runs special trains that passengers can book tickets for in advance. Recently, in Tamil Nadu, the tickets for special trains during the Diwali season sold out within minutes! Yes, you read that right!

In Tamil Nadu, Diwali and Pongal are two of the most widely observed festivals. Hence, many people travel to their hometowns during this time. According to an article which was recently published by DT Next, the sale of train tickets for Diwali special trains went on sale on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

These were for trains plying on October 29, 2024. The tickets were for Tirunelveli and Guravayur Expresses. As per the article, the tickets sold out within 15 minutes! These are not the only train tickets that sold out like hotcakes.

As per an article by Live Chennai, tickets for Diwali special trains from Chennai to Tenkasi and Madurai sold out within just five minutes as well!

Only Three People Waiting In Queue At Egmore Got Tickets

The article also went on to say that many people who went to buy tickets offline could not avail of them. This is what happened to the people waiting in queue at Egmore Station since 6 in the morning. Only the first three people were able to get tickets before they were sold out.

Tickets for a few trains even went on sale on July 1 and 2. Though they are not sold out yet, they are quickly selling out. It is possible that the railway authorities might have to arrange for more trains. It is likely that after failing to get tickets, many will resort to hijacking seats which will lead to overcrowding.
