Mumbai will level up its sporting infrastructure as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) prepares to build a 1 lakh-seater stadium in Thane. This project marks MCA’s first-ever expansion beyond its iconic Wankhede base, with strong backing from the Maharashtra government. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the land allotment for this mega development during a special event at Wankhede Stadium on 17 May.

According to The Times of India, the proposed stadium will be built in Amane village, located in the Thane district. The MCA has identified a 50-acre plot for the project, roughly 68 km from Wankhede Stadium. The association has already applied for the land under a tender floated by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

This marks the MCA’s first major infrastructural leap outside Mumbai’s traditional sporting hubs. Currently, the city’s cricketing landscape includes Wankhede Stadium with a capacity of 33,000, DY Patil Stadium with 45,000, and Brabourne Stadium with 20,000 seats. Once complete, the new 1-lakh seater stadium will be one of the largest in India, second only to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

A Tribute To MCA’s Late President

The project is more than just a cricket ground — it is also a tribute to the late Amol Kale, MCA’s former president. He played a pivotal role in conceptualising the stadium before his untimely passing. The new facility aims to carry forward his vision by offering two international-standard grounds capable of hosting first-class matches and global events.

As reported by TOI, the MCA will design the stadium with world-class amenities for both players and spectators, aiming to elevate Mumbai’s status on the international cricketing map. The association has aligned this move with its 2030 centenary celebrations, making it a symbolic milestone in its legacy.

Boost To Sports Infrastructure

This new development reflects the Maharashtra government’s focus on strengthening sports infrastructure across the state. By extending support to the MCA, the government is paving the way for large-scale sporting events that can attract international attention and tourism.
