Ocean View Pool Villas, Infinity Pool & Dining On The Hill – All This & More At Six Senses Samui

If you’re lucky enough to make it to Koh Samui, an island just a 45-minute flight from Bangkok, off the east coast of Thailand, you probably expect sun, sea and lots of frozen drinks, around an infinity pool fit for 100 Instagram ‘likes’. But if you’re like most millennial travellers, you’ll also want a little local authenticity with your luxury – and if that’s the case, boutique hotel Six Senses Samui needs to be part of your itinerary.

On the northern tip of Samui Island, Six Senses Samui is a rustic rainforest retreat set among 20 acres of indigenous plants. From the 66 private villas carved out of the natural landscape (natural vegetation, wooden beams and outdoor showers), to an on-property farm where they source much of their restaurants’ ingredients, at Six Senses Samui you’ll revel in the lap of luxury while getting a real feel for local culture. That is, if you ever manage to leave your room.

1. Ocean View Pool Villas

The most stunning villas in any property on the island are undeniably Six Senses’. Their Ocean View Pool Villas are split across two levels, with the bedroom situated on the upper level, featuring floor to ceiling windows offering a view over the Gulf of Thailand – that’s right, from bed. The open plan bathroom is down a few stairs, and incorporates a marble tub (also with views over the sea) and an outdoor bamboo shower. Add a sizeable terrace complete with a plunge pool, large outdoor daybed, and sun loungers, and it really is hard to see much more of the hotel.

2. Infinity Pool

You will, however, need to spend at least a few hours at the main infinity pool – arguably the pièce de résistance of the property. Built so that you can’t tell where the pool water ends and the Gulf of Thailand begins, it’s blue hues as far as the eye can see. There’s an unnamed and uninhabited island close by as well, which lends itself to the resort’s secluded, paradise built-out-of-the-rock vibe. You’ll want to try the local Thai wines.

3. Dining

With their own herb gardens and organic farm, you can bet the food at Six Senses Samui is some of the best on the island. Their main restaurant, Dining On The Hill, on the sunset side of the resort, serves dinner as well as a breakfast buffet – don’t miss their famous BBQ seafood night. Their newest, and signature restaurant, Dining on the Rocks, serves ‘New Asian’ cuisine (Thai with a modern twist) and is spread out on various levels with tables on nine terraced decks of weathered teak and bamboo. They’ve also got a larger deck table, separated from the others, especially for proposals.

4. Spa

If you know anything about luxury spas, you’ll know Six Senses is renowned for them. Six Senses Samui holds the bar high, with a focus not just on the physical (although we’d certainly recommend you don’t leave before getting a traditional Thai massage here). Specialist therapies include myotherapie (a manipulation technique said to change your posture), yogic programmes, hypnotherapy, and astrology by local practitioners. The treatment rooms have floor to ceiling windows with views over the Gulf and private showers – so even if you’re left feeling particularly zen from your hypnosis, a cold shower and that view of blue will sort you right out.
