Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is offering a one-of-a-kind heritage experience at Al Shindagha Museum, the UAE’s largest heritage museum. As part of the newly introduced ‘Family Weekend,’ this month’s family-oriented program is a delightful exploration of traditional crafts, local maritime heritage, and the profound influence of the sea on community life.

Kicking off on September 23rd and 24th, the inaugural Family Weekend sets the stage for a recurring event that unfolds every last weekend of the month. Each instalment focuses on a distinct theme, promising a diverse journey throughout the year. In line with the theme ‘Life by the Coast,’ this initiative invites visitors on a cultural odyssey to delve into Dubai’s coastal environment through engaging and interactive activities.

During this month’s Family Weekend, participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on workshops. One highlight was the ‘Boat Building’ workshop, hosted by the Visitors’ Centre, which delved into the history of this venerable profession. Here, attendees witnessed a captivating demonstration of traditional rope-making techniques using palm tree fibres at the Culture of the Sea house. Simultaneously, they took on the creative challenge of crafting boats using time-honoured materials.

The Traditional Jewellery House beckoned families to its ‘Jewellery Making’ workshop, a creative haven where the art of jewellery design converged with reverence for heritage pieces. Families embarked on captivating journeys via the ‘Family Trails,’ leading them through the enchanting alleyways of Dubai Creek – the Birth of a City. Here, they unravelled the captivating story of the creek’s origins and its profound cultural significance.

Exploring Dubai’s Rich Coastal Heritage

Abdulla Al Obeidli, Acting Manager of Al Shindagha Museum, mentioned Dubai Culture’s pivotal role in preserving local heritage. It has left an indelible mark on everyday life and become an integral facet of the UAE’s history and heritage. He remarked that Dubai Culture is committed to conveying the intellectual and cultural heritage of the Emirates. It showcases the various dimensions of traditional handicrafts. It also sheds light on their historical and artistic aspects and emphasises their presence in our cultural landscape. Additionally, their aim is to raise awareness of their significance.

The ‘Life By the Coast’ program has a crucial role. It illuminates coastal heritage and  promotes Emirati culture on a global scale. It aligns seamlessly with Dubai’s cultural objectives. Additionally, it nurtures a resilient national identity.
This is for future generations as it  ensures the rich tapestry of the UAE’s heritage thrives and continues to inspire.
