The Ultimate Guide To Backwater Life Inside A Traditional Houseboat On Kerala’s Vembanad Lake

Kerala is very fondly called ‘God’s Own Country’ and it is so true. The state is simply blessed with nature’s love and how. It is famous for its scenic beauty, mesmerising beaches, lip-smacking cuisine and lovely backwaters. Kerala’s Vembanad lake is known for its backwaters and the traditional houseboat.

What is the point of visiting Kerala if you miss the backwater life in the house boat? In our recent episode of I Love My India, our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani experienced the feeling of staying in a traditional houseboat on Kerala’s backwaters. Here is the ultimate guide.

Traditional Houseboat In Kerala

Vembanad Lake is known as the largest lake in Kerala and the longest lake in the country. It is also termed as a fast growing backwater tourism spot. Kamiya experienced the backwater life in Kerala in a Kettuvallam. Kettuvallam is a traditional houseboat. ‘Kettu’ means tying something with a rope and ‘Vallam’ means boat.

The houseboat by CGH Earth’s Spice Coast Cruises offered a cosy bedroom, an inhouse kitchen, sunbed and a common area with dining space. The experience began with fresh coconut water as a welcome drink. The houseboat has 3 members who are at your service with a beautiful smile.  You will be served fresh seafood straight from the lake cooked in the inhouse kitchen. You can get down at a vocal village for a walk or cycle tour as well.
